On 5th July the College of Commissioners is expected to present its decision on the legal nature of the EU-Canada free trade deal.
The College has to decide whether the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada will be presented to the EU member states as a so-called “mixed agreement” that requires the approval by all 28 national parliaments, or whether the treaty falls completely under EU competence and can therefore be applied after a simple vote of the European Parliament and the countries’ trade ministers in the Council.
With the text of CETA now finalized and formal signature of the agreement expected to take place as early as September 2016, a coalition of European Trade union organizations including EFFAT express its concerns over the far-reaching consequences of the agreement for workers’ rights, public services and democracy as a whole.
EFFAT encourages you to do the same and write letters to your national parliaments and to your Government as well urging them to outline the trade union movement concerns over the agreement and to make sure that CETA is interpreted as a mixed agreement.
