Hotel housekeepers and their unions will be taking action around the globe in the week of 8-14 October 2018.

This year, unions will be focusing on the need for negotiated measures to tackle the routine sexual harassment which threatens housekeepers’ safety and well-being all over the world.

Led by the IUF, this Global Week of Action represents an important next step in the IUF’s efforts to support the struggle of hotel housekeepers and to pressure the global hotel industry to treat hotel workers with respect and dignity.

Employers have a responsibility to ensure that workers have safe and decent working conditions. Therefore, hotel housekeepers should be entitled to the right to form or join a union and to collective bargaining.

This week, the IUF will show particular solidarity and support to all hospitality workers at Marriott hotels, the world’s largest hotel group and a standard-setter for the industry. In the United States, lengthy negotiations have failed to meet the union’s demands for an agreement which would bring a living wage, job security and improved protection against sexual harassment which afflicts hospitality workers.

The IUF has launched a new website – workersofmarriott.org – to monitor Marriott’s compliance with international human rights standards throughout their operations, including the fundamental right of all workers at Marriott hotels to join or form a union and collectively negotiate the terms and conditions of their employment.

EFFAT has addressed a letter to Marriott CEO Arne Sorensen, expressing concerns about the state of labour relations at Marriott in many countries, suggesting that only through more dialogue positive solutions be found, and strongly encouraging the company to move in this direction.
